The Big Secret - Or How to Build Muscle

By the amount of training articles that can be found in the popular muscle magazines and online (including mine) one might think that building muscle was extremely difficult.

The truth-of-the-matter is while building muscle is not easy and can be downright frustrating at times-one constant rings true.

Consistency is my biggest key to building muscle.

I don't care what program you follow, if it's high intensity training, volume workouts, super-slow, or anything in between-if you do not do it consistently you will not make much in the way of muscle gains.

Before you scream something like, but I don't want to live at the gym, I have a life you know!

Getting yourself into a regular routine-and sticking to it-does not mean living at the gym.

You go to the gym, bust your rump, and get out of there, nothing more needs to be done.

Of course, you need to be consistent in all the other areas as well if you want to truly make great gains.

Going to the gym four days per week and really hitting it hard is great, no question about it, but here is the thing, if you follow that up with a diet that is not high in quality protein, good fats, and clean carbs-you are short changing yourself.

And being consistent plays a major role here, sure you managed to get in all your meals for three days in a role, then well, you slipped up for a week and really did not make the time to eat something every two to three hours, over the long haul this is not going to make gaining muscle any easier.

Same goes with rest, the harder you train, the more rest you will need-always remember growth happens out of the gym, when you are resting, not in the gym.

And by rest, I mean sleep, I know not everyone can get eight to ten hours of sleep every night, especially college students, but try and get as much as you can.

SOME KEY POINTS

We all know the genetic wonder that can (and does) eat junk food at every meal, stays out late partying, and still makes more gains in a month than you and I do in a year, however, just remember keep being consistent and your gains will continue to come, maybe not always fast, but they will come.

CONCLUSION

To me bodybuilding has always been journey, one that I want to stay on for life, so don't be worried if you only added a few pounds to your lifts this past month or your body weight is (just only) moving up.

As long as your are consistent in doing the things that matter, working out hard on a regular basis, eating every two to three hours, and getting plenty of sleep, you will see all of the one and two pound gains begin to add up over time-and one day you will look in the mirror and smile-ah the benefits of being consistent.

HAPPY TRAINING!
